Eating NYC: Prune

Prune in the East Village is one of my absolutely favorite spots in New York City and it is always such a treat when I get to go. Chef and owner, Gabrielle Hamilton, is a chef I really admire and am inspired by. I love her take on simple foods, using the best quality ingredients and incredible combinations.

Everything about Prune is special. It is a tiny restaurant on a side street in the buzzing East Village. Once you walk in, you feel like you have been transported to a little French bistro. The interior is beautiful and cozy, with tiled floors, wood benches and an incredible bar. There is also something so satisfying about the pop of pink used throughout the restaurant, menus and cookbook.

Every time I go for dinner, I always have to start with the Radishes, sweet butter and kosher salt. I know it sounds silly and simple, but there is something so delicious and satisfying about fresh, crunchy radishes and the decedent, creamy butter.

I believe the dinner menu changes by the season, but the last time I went (right before Thanksgiving 2019), we ordered incredible mussels in a delicious broth with white wine, cream, potatoes and leeks, roasted duck over creamy sweet potato puree as well as two sides, Brussels sprouts with crispy chicken skin and a spinach gratin.

Even though you might be stuffed to the brim after dinner, do not miss dessert. All the desserts were incredibly delicious and simple. We ordered an apple tart with a ricotta cream as well as a salt baked pear with walnuts and honey.

While I have been to Prune a few times for dinner, I have also been for brunch and it is equally incredible. The mimosas and Bloody Mary’s were incredible and everything our table ordered was amazing. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, we had the Dutch Pancake (unreal), the spicy stewed chickpeas, the Spaghetti a la Carbonara and more.

Prune is such an incredible culinary experience and a treat. Next time you are you in NY, make a reservation and thank me later!
