the roundup: september 2023
Food:
We started off September going to Gibson Island, MD for Labor Day weekend and while we were there, my friends dad lifted his crab trap and boiled us some very fresh crabs. We spent the afternoon catching up and picking crabs.
We had some friends over for dinner and tried the NYTC Korean Cheeseburger with Sesame-Cucumber Pickles and wow they were good. If you haven’t tried this recipe, please do, they are such a fun take on an American classic.
I made this Broccoli Salad with Peanuts and Tahini-Lime Dressing and it was so easy, crisp and refreshing. A perfect end-of-summer recipe!
I also made this NYTC recipe for a Orecchiette Salad with Halloumi Croutons and it was so easy, refreshing and delicious. I added some Kalamata olives for some extra brininess. But this will definitely go on my warm-weather-rotation. We dug in so fast I wasn’t able to snap a picture!
I bought three new release cookbooks this month and I am so excited about each of them! Let’s Eat by Dan Pelosi, Shabbat by Adeena Sussman and Portico by Leah Koenig. I am so excited to cook from each of them and report back!
After I got Dan Pelossi’s new cookbook, I was incredibly inspired by his Bean, Kale & Linguica Skillet and decided to recreate it to my taste and what I had on hand, hence came about the Andouille, White Bean & Kale Skillet. It was soooo easy to make, delicious and honestly, very cheap. This will definitely be joining the weeknight meal rotation.
The Jewish High Holidays (Jewish New Years) fell in September this year and it was so great to have my family with me in DC. Here is everything we made for Rosh Hashana.
My friend took me to Tsehay Ethiopian Restaurant and Bar, which just relocated from Park View to Adams Morgan and it was unreal. We had the Sambosa with beef, and then shared the Tsehay’s Vegan Combination and added lamb and beef tibs. AMAZING. We had the I will definitely be going back, often.
We finally made it to VA to try the new Japanese BBQ spot, Gyu San, and it did not disappoint. It was such a fun meal, everything was delicious and the attention to detail was unreal.
Drinks:
We picked up this Usonia Cayuga Cayuga at Nido and it literally tasted like summer in a bottle of white wine. It has super tropical and bright flavors that would be unreal with Thai food or a coconut curry.
Other Things:
Like I mentioned in the food section, we started off the month of September in Gibson Island, MD at our friend’s family house and we had the best time. We really lucked out on the weather and we had such a fun summer weekend!
I really think I am in my adult wardrobe era. I have been scarily cleaning out my closet, adding things to Poshmark and replacing items with timeless, high quality pieces.
Very late to the party, but I finally read Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus and it was just such a good read. I guess, subconsciously, I was holding out because of the hype, but it is really worth it. They are also coming out with a series on Amazon in October, so if you needed a push to read it, now is the time!
