the roundup: January 2024

Food:

  • We made some tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons to start off the year and while the tomato soup recipe wasn’t anything to write home about, I learned two things. 1) you should be making your grilled cheese in the oven between two pans for extra cheese skirt and crispiness and 2) you should chop up your grilled cheese to make croutons.

  • To ring in the New Year, we had some delightful caviar from Pearl Street Caviar and it was so easy to order, delivered on time and obviously, was delicious. If you are looking for a great caviar delivery, you should absolutely look into Pearl Street. If you need some inspo on how to serve your caviar- look no further than my post here.

  • The other show-stopped of our NYE meal was our banh mi board. It was so fun to put together and even more fun to eat. We bought a boudin blanc sausage and that was the highlight meat for me!

  • I had the most amazing birthday meal with my husband at Omakase DC. Chef Ricky is an absolute rock star and I have nothing but praise for the meal we had. It was worth every single penny. Forget every single other omakase experience in DC and run here. Every single bite was better than the next and honestly mind altering. The fish was amazing, the flavor combos were amazing and the sake was the icing on the cake.

  • We celebrated my birthday with my closest friends at Peking Gourmet Inn with some amazing Peking duck and a boat-load of other Chinese food goodies. Everything was so so delicious and I am so lucky to have such a lovely group of friends in DC to celebrate with.

  • Back to my favorite and faithful Huong Viet at the Eden Center for some pho while it is literally so cold in DC. It is the only thing that sounded good with that sort of weather!

Drinks:

  • We actually bought this wine in Bordeaux back in May because at our wine class, the teacher told us this sweet wine was always enjoyed on New Years and Christmas with foie gras and we did exactly that. It is very very sweet and cut the richness of the liver quite nicely.

  • On a recent (and delicious) trip to Lutece, we tried a bottle of Morgon Les Charmes Domaine Saint-Cyr and it was so nice. It is is an organic gamay from Domaine St. Cyr. It was super drinkable with a lovely fruity flavor.

Other Things:

  • I have been ABSOLUTELY eating up The Traitors on Peacock. It has been such a fun and mindless show to get me through January.

  • It would be super off-brand of me to not mention Love Island All Stars which is my Super Bowl. I love it so much that I even figured out how to download and use a VPN (shoutout to Windscribe) so I can watch in real time.

  • I have been living in my Lululemon Align High-Rise Mini-Flared Pant (extra short) this month and I want 5 more pairs. They are super comfy, the perfect length and I like that they aren’t clinging to my calves.

  • DC got a bit of snow this month and I forgot how much I love the snow in this city. My dog loved it even more than I did!

  • More TV (sorry) but I also watched Poker Face on Peacock and loved it! It is sort of a misfits / quirky mystery show and Natasha Lyonne is great!
