the roundup: december 2022

Favorite Foodie Things:

  • For the first week of December we were up in Boston and we stumbled upon a reservation in Somerville at a spot called Juliet. It is a French restaurant specializing in cuisine from Nice and it was so delicious. If I lived in the area, this would be a place I would go to all the time. We loved the focaccia bread with caramelized onions, olives and anchovies and the tuna conserva was incredible. Everything was incredible, those two just really stood out!

  • While Grazie Nonna has been open for a minute, I finally got to try it out this month with my girlfriends! It was a great atmosphere and super delicious! I think I have found the best chicken parm in DC!!

  • We celebrated a friend’s birthday at arguably the best dim sum spot in the DMV area, Hong Kong Pearl Seafood Restaurant in Falls Church, VA, and it was delicious as always!

  • I made Alison Roman’s Just Cooked Cabbage with Butter, Anchovy & Lemon and it was a delight, not to mention incredibly easy to make (and cheap… which is nice in this economy). I love cabbage in any form, but I had never made it like this!

  • On Christmas Eve we went to HoneyPig in Annandale, VA and had ourselves a Christmas feast! It was delicious as always and the servers were super friendly and kind.

  • For NYE this year we were away in West Virginia with our friends and we made a whole event out of making and eating hor d’eurves. Some highlights included this focaccia bread I made with caramelized onions and anchovies on it (inspired by what we had at Juliet in Boston), some tinned fish from Portugal, some eggs persille from Rebekah Peppler’s cookbook!

  • Over our WV trip we also made two Claire Saffitz desserts and we were super impressed with both- a tres leches cake with hazelnuts and a meringue topped flourless chocolate cake.

Other Things That Made Me Happy:

  • I thought Wednesday on Netflix was brilliant and such a fun watch. I am really hoping for a 2nd season!!

  • We got our wedding highlight video back and it was even better than I could have imagined. The team at Shutter & Sound did such a great job capturing our special moments and stringing them all together. I am so pleased with how it turned out!

  • The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah was in December this year and was conveniently over Christmas and while not a big holiday, it always is a great way to wrap up the year. I love having a menorah of candles burning at home, it is so cozy!
