The Round up: August 2024

Food:

  • As we start the Farewell DC Tour, we are going back to all of our favorite spots, including Incheon in Annandale. If you still haven’t been to Incheon, sorry, but what have you been doing. Chef Justin and his team are honestly so amazing, nice and talented. I have only been blown away every time I have been. Some of the highlights for me this time was the jjamppong (seafood noodle soup), perilla leaf pesto, obvious the ssam and the beef tongue broth with rice to wrap up the meal.

  • We went to see my family in the Bay Area for a few weeks this month and my husband and I did a date night to Handroll Project in the Mission. It was delicious! I love how innovative but familiar their flavors are. I love being able to sit at the bar and watch the sushi chefs make each roll so meticulously.

  • One of my family’s favorite things to do when we are home is do at-home sushi. We get all the fish and supplies at Tokyo Fish Market in Berkley and it is so fun to hang out all together and make some fun handroll combos.

  • We had dinner at a family friend’s house and it was a summer-time feast featuring fresh corn, roast chicken, grilled veggies, crispy rice, salad and panzanella.

  • Obviously we had to spend a day out in West Marin and eat at one of my favorite spots, Tony’s. If you go, get some fresh oysters, some grilled oysters (they are all delicious), and the seafood stew. I promise you will thank me!

  • It is no trip home for me if we don’t go to Kabuto. Honestly, probably some of the best, unassuming sushi I have ever had. (Mind you, I have never been to Japan, but still).

  • Mi Pueblo was a staple in my household growing up and it had been a while since I went back for anything beyond the chicken burrito with rice, beans and cheese. We went for a quick dinner one night and it was still pretty good!

  • Sitting outside at the Columbus Café in North Beach SF is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon in SF and it is even better when you do the battle of the pizzas by ordering a few slices from Tony’s and a few from Golden Boy Pizza. They are both delish but very different. I prefer the toppings from Tony’s and the crust from Golden Boy.

  • As much of an institution as Zuni Café is, my husband has never been with me before. AND his favorite meal is chicken and fries. Zuni has been there for ages and if I were you, I would go for two things only, their incredible wood burning fire roasted chicken (that comes with a bread salad) and their shoe string fries (extra crispy). I have had the Zuni cookbook sitting on my shelf for years, so maybe it is time to try the roast chicken myself!

Other:

  • Spent about 2 weeks out of August back in Marin County to spend time with family and we had such a nice time! Here is a view from my childhood backyard during a gorgeous sunset!

  • More pictures from our trip home to the Bay Area on a very foggy SF day!! To be honest, getting to wear jeans and a sweater in SF in August feels amazing coming from the heat and humidity of the East Coast!

  • I got a few shades of Essie’s new (ish) jelly gloss nail polishes and they are really great! They are on the more shear side (which seems to be super in right now) so they need a few layers if you want them to be more opaque but I love them!
