The RoundUp: August 2022

Favorite Foodie Things:

  • This probably should have been a bullet in every summer Round Up but farmer’s markets are just so incredible in the summer time. I love all the fruits and veg that you can get at this time of year- like amazing tomatoes, peaches/nectarines, the most amazing melons and more!

  • I got to spend the first weekend in August back home (see below), but that also meant some home food for me! One night while we were home, we made homemade pizzas and watched Luca and it was perfect!

  • I also had my bridal shower that weekend and my dad made this beautiful cheeseboard and it was delicious. Shout out to the mortadella roles!

  • We also went to our favorite Ukrainian market in the Richmond neighborhood of SF to get some caviar to have one night for dinner. Caviar is bougie but it is one of our favorite meals to have together as a family.

  • Being home at the end of summer also means getting to reap the benefits of a lot of fresh tomatoes in our garden. Like a lot…. of tomatoes. (You can’t even see the depth of this bowl!!)

  • This was my last meal before I flew back to DC and it had two of my most favorite “home foods” that my dad makes; roast chicken and kasha varnishke (an Ashkenazi Jewish staple). And if you are sitting here thinking, ugh, so sad she only got kasha varnishke on her last day at home. Fear not! I took a bucket-size Tupperware of kasha varnishke home to DC!

  • Also while back home, we went to my absolute favorite sushi spot in the Richmond called Kabuto sushi. EVERYTHING WAS SO DELICIOUS and we had the best night. I cannot stress this enough, if you are in SF, please go check Kabuto out. We tried some new things this time around and it was all amazing.

  • This month we tried Tail Up Goat’s tasting menu because, of course, we were pulled in my their menu addition of fried potatoes and caviar- truly the best way to get me to try a restaurant. The food was good but it was a verrrrrrrrry expensive meal for what it is. I think Tail Up Goat has the perfect vibes, great drinks, the best staff but out of their two restaurants, I much prefer Reveler’s Hour. I am always so confused about TUG’s concept and therefore never crave it.

  • We have started getting in some new cookware from our registry and I am sooooo trilled with our new Fiesta plates/bowls. They are amazing quality and I just love them.

  • I feel like Red Hen is a DC staple (especially if you are a pasta girl like me), and I have no idea what took me so long to try it but thank you to my friend who had her birthday dinner there. The place has such a ice vibe, the Lambrusco was great and every single pasta on our table was delicious! I can’t wait to go back!

  • My work travel to various campuses picked back up at the end of August and that meant some food spots in Charlottesville, VA. One of my first stops for a pastry and coffee was at the Wool Factory and it was very delicious- the almond croissant is actually unreal.

  • In Charlottesville, I also went to Public Fish & Oyster for a delicious seafood-filled meal. We got a variety of raw oysters and moules frites and it was super super good! Definitely going in my Charlottesville rotation!

  • I started a new “series” on my Instagram, where I document a week’s worth of dinners in one post. I don’t know if anyone else is enjoying it, but I am!

Other Things That Made Me Happy:

  • If you are a Love Island UK fan (and I mean really a fan), you should be listening to season 7’s Toby Aromolaran’s podcast, Fancy a Chat”. He gets a lot of previous islanders on and you get some real background information on the show!

  • In August I took my final trip home to the Bay Area before we go back for our wedding! I had my first dress fitting- which was amazing. We are using Tailor Maid in SF and I couldn’t say enough good things about them. I also had my hair trial and I am so excited about what we decided to go with. I think it will surprise people! I am such a visual person so it has been so nice to see everything come together as a cohesive look and not piece by piece.

  • On my last trip home, I also had my bridal shower which was very nice. To be honest, a bridal shower was not an event I wanted/was looking forward to, but it was very nice. It was very casual and in my parent’s backyard.

  • HBO’s House of Dragon came out in August- the wait is over!!!!

  • I have been obsessed with our wedding registry lately- honestly the most fun part of getting married is putting together the registry. It really feels like we are “building our life together” and it is very exciting. We have used Zola and it has been pretty seamless.
