The RoundUp: August 2021

Favorite Foodie Things:

  • I got the opportunity to go meet my dad in New York City for a few days. While he was in meetings, I worked from the hotel room and then we spent the rest of the time eating (let’s be real) and walking around the city in the severe heat. I think that means we worked off all of our meals… maybe.

When I got in on Tuesday evening, my dad brought me some spaghetti Bolognese from one of our favorite Italian spots, Elio’s. My family has been going here since as long as I can remember (my parents have been going to Elio’s since the ‘80s!) and it was still amazing even with it being take out!

Not pictured, but on Wednesday I picked up an amazing bahn mi from Joju which was a fast casual Vietnamese spot near my hotel, for lunch. For dinner we had an incredible meal at Marea, a very fancy Italian seafood spot near central park. It was by far one of the most delicious meals I have had in a very long time. We had a lobster and burrata salad, some fluke crudo, pasta with octopus and bone marrow and a scallop entrée to split.

We also (obviously) had to head to Barney Greengrass, because it truly isn’t a Goldberg trip to New York City without it. We got coffee, borscht, bagels, sable and kippered salmon (extra tomatoes).

We stopped at Katz’s Delicatessen for a “snack”, and by snack, I mean we split a very large pastrami sandwich and some pickles. I haven’t been to Katz’s in so long, it was really worth the hype.

The highlight meal of the trip for me was a Korean spot called Her Name is Han. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu and everything on the menu and it was all absolutely delicious. We sat in a lovely airconditioned outside shack and had just a really great meal. We ordered the rice cakes, the shrimp and pepper pancake, Korean fried chicken, pork belly, their signature bulgogi, and a pork rib and kimchi stew with tofu and pumpkin. If I lived in New York, you better believe I would be there at least once a week.

  • Did everyone but me know they made frosted Rice Krispies???!!! It is literally the best of both world- Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies!!!

  • We finally tried a spot in our neighborhood that has been on our list for a while now, called The Imperial. They serve up Mid-Atlanta food (mostly seafood) in a trendy environment. It was very good and SUPER well priced. We would definitely go back, especially for some share plates and drinks.

Other Things That Made Me Happy:

  • I haven’t spoken about my puppy on here enough but he truly brings me so much joy. Lenny is such a quirky/weird dog in the best ways possible. (I guess he really takes after his parents!) My phone is literally only pictures of Len and food, so maybe I should create a whole section for him on these posts.

  • Over the last year, I have been on a pretty big podcast binge- I have pretty much stopped listening to music, unless it is LoFi while I am working- my new favorite podcast has been NPR’s Throughline, which is essentially NPR’s history podcast. I can’t get enough!

  • I also finished two books I really liked this month, Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid and The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. Both are stories about race in America but in very different times and through very different stories. I couldn’t put either of them down!

  • I have been watching a LOT of Love Island. This was a big summer, both Love Island UK and USA were on and both finished up in August. I really loved the cast of the USA version this year. They were so amazing! The UK one took a while for me to warm up to but I really loved it in the end. FULL of twists this year.

  • New foundation alert! I have been loving the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint with SPF. It is stunning on the face and truly feels like you aren’t wearing anything at all!
