The Round Up: October 2024

Food:

  • Rosh Hashana (the Jewish new year) fell in early October this year, so I had my in-laws in for a meal and everything turned out very delicious. You can read more about the menu here but the highlights for me was my round challah, topped with sesame and nigella seeds, as well as Ruhama’s T’Beet. T’Beet is an Iraqi dish of seasoned chicken baked and rice. It was DELICIOUS and I will definitely be making it again as it is the perfect centerpiece for a meal!

  • We kicked off October in Dallas for a wedding but we ended up finding a Miznon in Dallas and we could not be more thrilled. My husband and I LOVE the Miznon restaurants and go whenever we find one. The Dallas location had a fun menu and great atmosphere. We ordered the best hummus, a chicken schnitzel pita and a roasted chicken pita. They were both heavenly.

  • My two requirements for Dallas were BBQ and Tex-Mex so for our BBQ experience we went to Terry Black’s and it was very yummy. Not the best BBQ I have ever had, but definitely better than what I could find in DC. I went for mac and cheese, coleslaw, pork ribs, cheddar and jalapeño sausage, brisket burnt ends and of course, peach cobbler.

  • Like I mentioned above, I definitely had a Dallas food agenda and the Tex-Mex at Los Molcajetes was a delicious spot. This spot definitely felt a bit more local and had so many amazing things to chose from! I got a platter with a cheese chile relleno with a chicken enchilada with beans and cheese.

  • While in Evanston for a few days, I got the most delicious ham and cheese croissant that I have had in a while at Newport Coffee House. The coffee was great too!

  • I also was in Philadelphia for about 24 hours and obviously I had a food hit-list. I went to Goldie Falafel for lunch and it was amazing, stopped into K’Far Cafe to pick up pastries to bring home for my husband, and then went to Dan Dan Rittenhouse for some amazing Taiwanese food for dinner.

  • After travelling so much and feeling a bit run-down, I really needed a nourishing and comforting lunch for I made Hetty McKinnon’s pea and pasta soup. The broth is gingery and garlicy and so satisfying when you need a warm-hug-kind-of-lunch.

  • We took a lunch-time trip out to the Gloucester area and had a delicious lunch at Lobsta Land. I really loved my Gloucester Fish Stew which reminded me of Cioppino and was so warming and satisfying.

  • One Saturday night, we weren’t starving for dinner so we went to Whole Foods and grabbed a bunch of cheese, crackers and other munchie bites. We had a lovely cheese board and watched Bake off and it was the best night in.

Other:

  • Like I mentioned above, we spent the first weekend in October in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. I have really never spent any time there at all so it was fun to see! Our first day, we went into Dallas, exploring downtown / uptown and Henderson Knox streets, and our second day we went to the Fort Worth Stock Yards, which was definitely an experience!

  • October also brought us to our last wedding of 2024!! We were lucky enough to be invited to about 10 or 11 weddings this year and ended up going to 7. Ending this year-long wedding season with a bang!

  • I also spent a few days in Evanston, IL, for work this month and it was really lovely! I stayed at the Graduate Hotel in Evanston and it was cozy and perfect for my stay.

  • It is most definitely Fall in Boston! We decided to take advantage of the Fall weather and took a mini trip to Boston Hill Farm to get some pumpkins for our front steps, some apple cider donuts and other goodies! It was such a lovely day and felt very “New England-y”.

  • My parents got us a grill (so nice of them) for our new home and we finally put it to work! We made grilled swordfish with a grilled corn salad that had tomatoes, grilled jalapenos, basil, grilled lemon and olive oil. it was so fun to use our grill and I can’t wait to cook so much more on the grill.

  • I am LOVING Culinary Class Wars on Netflix. It reminds me of Squid Games meets the original Japanese Iron Chef. It is really fun to watch and everyone is so talented!
