the roundup: march 2023

The Roundup is getting a little bit of a refresh in terms of sections to keep us all organized:

  • Food: This section is for all the food I have eaten/cooked/discovered/loved this month.

  • Drinks : This is a new section and I want to introduce you all to the wine or drinks I have been loving/ reaching for this month and why!

  • Other things: This is my catch-all category to give any other recs (clothes, tools, media, etc.) I discovered or loved this month.

  • Lenny: Everyone just needs a Len update!

Food:

  • Another huge win from Eric Wareheim’s book FoodHeim with the Nonna Sauce (red sauce) and it is so so delicious and beyond easy to make. I paired it with some Mill Valley Pasta Company pasta and it was delightful!

  • There is a new-ish bubbles bar in DC calls Pop Fizz Bar and I have now been twice and can confidently say this is my new favorite bar in DC! Plus they have birria fries and they were delicious!

  • This month we ordered take out from Chang Chang and it might steal the spot for the #1 Chinese takeout in DC. The lo mein was so so good and I cannot wait to order it again!

  • I go to H Mart a lot with my friends, but my husband rarely joins me. This month, my husband went with me and we had lunch together in the H Mart Fairfax, VA food court and it was not only delicious but so fun to pick out what we wanted to eat together. We went with a dumpling and rice cake soup and a soy glazed Korean fried chicken. Chef’s kiss!!

  • The Jewish holiday of Purim fell in March this year so we had some friends over for an Ashkenazi (Eastern European Jewish) feast of kasha varnishke, roasted chicken, roasted carrots and a challah panzanella salad. And of course, we can’t forget the star of the show…. hamentaschen!

  • My husband was out of town for a weekend so I decided to make a Spicy Pork & Cabbage Stir Fry for myself one night for dinner. It was so good and surprisingly easy to throw together.

  • I made some delicious Dan Dan Noodles this month, after being super inspired by Woks of Life blog post. I adjusted it slightly to be a bit more peanutty and a bit less chili filed.

  • We took our friends for their first ever Korean BBQ experience at HoneyPig in Annandale, VA and it was amazing as always. This is one of our favorite spots for KBBQ near us and the staff is so sweet and helpful.

  • We finally made it to Rose’s Luxury and man, it did not disappoint. For $95 this was soooo worth it. Everything was so tasty and so innovative and there wasn’t anything I didn’t love. Some standouts to me were the cauliflower, pork and lychee salad, the tomato and strawberry pasta and the chess pie.

  • Petite Cerise just opened this month from the team behind The Dabney so we absolutely had to check it out. It is a stunning restaurant (they did an amazing job on the design) and the food and drinks were lovely. We started with the little cherry sour and daiquiri myrtille, followed by the assiette de saucisson, boeuf cru et panisse croustillant, the poisson poele and the fricassee de poulet.

Drinks:

  • I am not normally a chardonnay gal but we picked up this 2019 Hardscrabble Chardonnay from Linden Winery in VA and we love it! It has super floral notes and is not dry for a Chardonnay.

  • I tried Gruner Veltliner from Steininger Winery (Austrian Wine) and it was delightful!

  • We took a class with the Capital Wine School this month and it was wonderful! We have been getting more and more into wine and it was nice to actually be taught how to taste, and think about wine. We learned how to articulate what we are tasting and how to read a wine label and know things just based on where the grapes are grown.

Other Things:

  • After a semi down few weeks, I bought myself a weighted blanket to try out and I have to say that I am obsessed. I went with the Brooklinen Weighted Blanket (in the color “deep alpine”). I chose this one because I wanted it to not look off in my space, and generally I prefer a regular looking blanket to a knitted or crochet looking blanket.

  • I have been loving Poshmark this month. Okay, I have been loving Poshmark for a few months now but I wanted a decent trial run before I formed by opinion. It is such an easy platform to sell your clothes and swap out things in your closet for new, amazing items! I have had such a fun time submitting offers for great pieces and adding some cool pieces to my wardrobe in a more sustainable way.

  • We watched Daisy Jones & The Six this month and absolutely loved it!
